Varför? De flesta målningarna är inspirerade av USA på den tid då vi bodde där ett år. Vi såg en idyllisk värld, målningarna visar karikatyrer av den.
Why? Most of the paintings are inspired by USA at the time when we lived there for a year. We saw an idyllic world, the paintings show caricatures of it.
Trots detta fastnade jag för detta underjordiska motiv. Varför? Plötsligt mindes jag.
In spite of that I got caught by this underground motif. Why? Suddenly I remembered.
Som tonåring läste jag mycket science fiction. Novellen som gav djupast intryck beskrev en framtid då New York hade vuxit till en byggnad, en enorm labyrint.
As a teenager I red a lot of science fiction. The story that gave the deepest impression described a future when New York had grown into one building, an enormous labyrinth

In that labyrinth the lowest classes lived from birth to death in underground slum.
När jag blev äldre började jag undra vad grunden kunde vara för en sådan dystopi.
As I grew older I began wondering about what the ground could be for such a dystopia.
Jag fann svaret i bilder på staden som en utopi, bilder som publicerades i början av 1900-talet.
I found the answer in pictures of the city as a utopia, pictures published in the beginning of the twentieth centrury.
Bland tonåringar som såg sådana bilder måste åtminstone en ha föreställt sig hur staden såg ut under de väl förbundna skyskraporna.
Among teenagers seeing such pictures at least one must have imagined what the city looked like under the well connected skyscrapers.
