Tidskriften Forskning och Framsteg anordnar varje år en kunskapskryssning. Föreläsarna i år berättade exempel som visar hur kunskap förändras när forskningen fortsätter.
Every year the magazine Forskning och Framsteg (Research and Progress) arranges a knowledge cruise. The lecturers this year told examples showing how knowledge changes when research continues.
The historian Dick Harrison, who in 2000 published The Black Death: the Worst Disaster to Strike Europe, told that historians for a long time doubted old assertions that entire parts of countries were deserted., Only a few percent could have died. Since then the continued research has taken up the deathrate step by step. His own book serves as an example; it is already obsolete on this point. The most probable today is that something like two thirds of Europe’s population died.
Sören Holmberg, specialist på valanalys, talade om presidentvalet i USA och jämförde med svenska val i olika hänseenden. En skillnad är att fler faktorer mäts i USA än i Sverige, t ex även religion, etnisk tillhörighet och homosexuell läggning.
Sören Holmberg, specialist in election analysis, talked about the president election in USA and compared it to Swedish elections in different respects. One difference is that more factors are measured in USA than in Sweden, e.g. religion, ethnic group and being gay or lesbian.
Något som överraskade oss är att fler amerikaner än svenskar röstar efter sina grundläggande partisympatier och sin ideologi. Kandidaterna är inte så viktiga som kampanjerna får oss att tro.
Something that surprised us is that more Americans than Swedes vote according to their identification with a party or an ideology. The candidates are not as important as the campaigns make us believe.
Agneta Skoog Svanberg, specialist på infertilitet och fertilitetsbehandling, gav oss exempel på de etiska problem som uppstår när forskning och behandling går framåt. Bör svenska medborgare få anlita surrogatmödrar i Indien?

Ariel Goo told us how two competing groups of scientists step by step have brought about conclusive proof for the fact that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. Those proofs made three scientists Nobel Prices winners in 2011.
Goobar projicerade foton på de båda grupperna och betonade att sådan forskning kräver att många medverkar. Han pekade stolt på sig själv i en av grupperna.

Föreställningar och kunskap ändras när forskning fortsätter. Ariel Goobas föredrag blev ett exempel på det. Han pekade på att Albert Einstein 1917, bara ett år efter att han lagt fram sin grundläggande ekvation, sköt in en kosmologisk konstant. Den blev ett tvisteämne som förde vetenskap framåt till beviset för att universums expansion accelererar.
Notions and knowledge change when research continues. Ariel Goobar’s lecture became an example. He pointed at the famous example that Albert Einstein in 1917, only a year after he had presented his basic equation, inserted a cosmological constant. It became a subject of contention that brought science forward to the proof for the acceleration of the expansion of the universe.

Staffan Ulfstrand väckte ett minne: en av plattorna Visionärernas stig i Berlin. Varje platta bar ett citat från något av EUs medlemmar. Britterna hade valt ett från Isaac Newton. Jag citerar det ur minnet:

Mitt minne av det väcktes av upplysningen att redan Linné placerat människan bland primaterna. Nu berättade Staffan Ulfstrand vad forskarna vet om denna primat. Det är mycket, och kunskapen växer. Trots det menar han att Darwins idé är den bästa någon lagt fram.
My memory on this was awoken by the information that already Linnæus placed man among the primates. Now Staffan Ulfstrand told what the scientists know about this primate. It is a lot, and the knowledge is growing. In spite of that he holds that Darwin’s idea was the best anyone had forwarded.
Staffan Ulfstrand berättade om vår och våra förfäders långa prägling plus vad vi är nu. Jag lyssnade efter tecken på social konstruktion som enda orsak till könsskillnader men fann inget.
Staffan Ulfstrand told about our and our ancestors’ long imprinting plus what we are now. I listened for signs of social konstruction as the only cause of gender differences but found no one.
Förut hade jag förstått att homo sapiens är enda däggdjuret där individerna stimuleras av rytm och av att hålla samma rytm. Föredragen under Kunskapskryssningen visade att det dessutom finns individer hos denna primat som kan använda humor och få gensvar. Alla föredragshållarna bevisade det. Vi fick både kunskap och motion medan vi satt stilla och lyssnade.
Previously I had understood that homo sapiens is the only mammal where the individuals are stimulated by rhythm and by keeping the same rythm. The lectures during the Knowledge Cruise showed that there are individuals of this primate who can use humour and get response. All the lecturers proved that. We got both knowledge and exercise while sitting still and listening.
